Shayne Coplan Renews Speculation About Polymarket Token
Coplan previously fueled token rumors by replacing XRP with “$POLY” in a list of leading cryptocurrencies posted on X last October.
Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan has renewed speculation about a native cryptocurrency after discussing an on-chain asset at the just-concluded TOKEN2049 conference in Singapore.
However, he offered no launch date or airdrop details, leaving traders guessing whether activity on the prediction market could eventually qualify them for a token allocation.
Coplan Hints at Programmable Utility for Polymarket
Coplan’s remarks at TOKEN2049 centered on an asset with “real programmable utility” tied to Polymarket’s platform economy. During a fireside conversation with Balaji Srinivasan, the founder discussed the idea of an on-chain asset but did not confirm a launch, explain how it would work, or specify what holders might receive.
The phrase “real programmable utility” leaves open several possibilities, but Coplan did not outline whether a future token would grant governance rights, provide access to platform functions, or give holders a claim on revenue. He also offered no indication that existing users would automatically qualify for a distribution.
The latest comments follow an earlier hint that drew attention in October last year, when Coplan posted a list of leading cryptocurrencies on X but replaced XRP with “$POLY,” adding a thinking-face emoji, with the cryptic gesture prompting speculation about a Polymarket token.
In that same month, the firm’s Chief Marketing Officer Matthew Modabber indicated that it intended to launch a token and conduct an airdrop. Polymarket’s parent company later filed trademark applications for POLY and $POLY in February 2026, but neither development established that an issuance was imminent.
As of today, Polymarket has not announced a token generation event, published airdrop eligibility requirements or provided a snapshot date or claim instructions, and its existing pUSD collateral token, used for trading on its Polygon-based system, is separate from the proposed POLY asset.

Airdrop Hopes Meet Trading Losses and Legal Scrutiny
There is also a question of what a token would mean for ordinary traders. A Galaxy Research study published on October 4 examined 2.9 million human-paced Polymarket accounts and found that more than 69% finished below break-even, with combined losses of $338.9 million. The findings concerned the platform’s international operations and tracked wallet addresses rather than verified individual traders.
Meanwhile, a New York lawsuit reported on September 24 alleges that Polymarket’s US operation offered unlicensed gambling and allowed users aged 18 to 20 to trade, despite the state’s minimum age of 21 for mobile sports betting. This is in addition to legal action taken by the city of Baltimore against Polymarket and rival Kalshi for allegedly offering illegal sports betting, and South Korean police opening criminal charges against 26 users of the platform in the country over nearly $13 million in illegal wagers.
