Ethereum wallets move $11M to Kraken: Is a sell-off coming?

Two Ethereum Foundation-linked wallets have reportedly transferred 4,393 ETH worth approximately $11.13 million to Kraken on October 12, raising questions about possible selling activity as Ethereum trades near $2,555.

Summary

  • Two Ethereum Foundation-linked wallets reportedly transferred 4,393 ETH worth approximately $11.13 million to Kraken recently.
  • Analyst EmberCN traced 59,751 ETH received from an Ethereum Foundation wallet ten years ago.
  • Over the past decade, the tracked wallet reportedly deposited 49,751 ETH into Kraken through transactions.
  • Ethereum traded near $2,555, gaining roughly 2% daily while declining approximately 6.85% over seven days.
  • Technical indicators showed ETH below its nine-day moving average, with relative strength index beneath 50.

According to blockchain analyst EmberCN, who reported the transfers on X, the addresses are connected to an Ethereum Foundation wallet that distributed 59,751 ETH approximately a decade ago. The analyst found that 49,751 ETH had been transferred to Kraken over the following ten years at an average historical price of roughly $658. However, neither the Ethereum Foundation nor Kraken has publicly confirmed that the latest deposit resulted in a sale.

Ethereum Foundation-linked wallets move 4,393 ETH to Kraken

The reported transfers involved two wallets identified through their historical connection to the Ethereum Foundation. EmberCN’s analysis indicated that the addresses moved a combined 4,393 ETH to Kraken, with the cryptocurrency valued at approximately $11.13 million when the transactions were identified. The transfers prompted questions about whether the foundation was preparing another sale, although the available blockchain information establishes the reported movement of assets, not their subsequent sale.

The wallet history dates back approximately ten years, when an address associated with the Ethereum Foundation transferred 59,751 ETH to the tracked recipient. According to EmberCN, the recipient has gradually transferred 49,751 ETH to Kraken since receiving the original allocation. The analyst calculated an average ETH price of around $658 across those historical transfers, but the figure represents the approximate market price when the transfers occurred, not independently verified sale proceeds.

The historical transfers amount to approximately 83% of the original 59,751 ETH allocation. However, the reported movement of funds does not establish that the Ethereum Foundation retained ownership or control over the recipient wallets throughout the period. A wallet’s historical connection to the foundation is different from confirmation that the foundation authorized the latest transaction.

The distinction is particularly relevant to the October 12 activity because no official statement has identified the purpose of the 4,393 ETH deposit. Kraken has not disclosed whether the funds were exchanged for cash, another cryptocurrency or retained in an exchange account. No corresponding sale records or withdrawals of proceeds were provided in the original analysis.

Ethereum Foundation has previously sold ETH to fund operations

The latest wallet activity has drawn attention to the Ethereum Foundation’s established treasury practices. In June 2025, the organization published a formal treasury management policy explaining how it manages cryptocurrency reserves, operational expenses and long-term funding requirements. The policy allows periodic ETH sales to maintain enough liquid assets for research, ecosystem grants and other activities.

Under the framework, the foundation evaluates its annual spending requirements against its available reserves and decides how much ETH may need to be converted into fiat-denominated assets. The policy originally established an annual operating expenditure target equivalent to 15% of treasury assets and a reserve buffer covering 2.5 years of expenses. It specifies that ETH sales may occur through fiat off-ramps or on-chain exchanges, with decisions reviewed as financial conditions change.

In April 2026, the foundation announced plans to sell 5,000 ETH through CoWSwap using a time-weighted average price strategy. The method spreads transactions over time instead of placing the entire order at once. As previously reported, the organization described the transaction as part of its treasury management program, which supports research, development, grants and donations.

The foundation subsequently completed other transactions involving institutional buyers. In May, it sold 10,000 ETH to BitMine through an over-the-counter transaction at an average price of $2,292 per token, following two earlier deals with the same buyer. The foundation’s treasury activity had included a combined 25,000 ETH sold through those transactions, according to the reported transaction history.

Those transactions were separately documented and should not be treated as evidence that the wallets identified by EmberCN belong to the foundation’s current treasury. The October 12 transfers have not been connected to a new official funding announcement, over-the-counter agreement or disclosed treasury sale.

Ethereum price rises despite reported Kraken inflows

Ethereum was trading near $2,554.59 on October 12, according to the supplied CoinGecko market snapshot. The cryptocurrency gained approximately 2.05% over the preceding 24 hours while remaining down 6.85% during the previous seven days. Trading volume stood near $8.88 billion, with a reported market capitalization of approximately $312 billion.

At the time of the market review, the CoinGecko price tracker showed ETH trading around $2,555, following a recovery from earlier weakness. The seven-day trading range extended from approximately $2,409 to $2,733, demonstrating the price changes recorded during the period. The market data confirms a daily recovery but does not establish whether the Kraken deposits influenced Ethereum’s trading activity.

The latest technical snapshot presented a mixed picture. TradingView data placed Ethereum’s nine-day simple moving average at $2,585.41, slightly above its observed price of $2,563.42. Trading below that moving average indicated that ETH had not fully recovered its short-term average price following the pullback from the 2,700–2,800 region.

Meanwhile, Ethereum’s 14-day relative strength index stood at 47.59, below its moving average of 53.39. The indicator remained under the neutral 50 level, consistent with weaker recent momentum in the supplied chart assessment. However, the RSI was above the conventional oversold threshold of 30, meaning the reading did not indicate oversold conditions under that measure.

The available figures identify $2,585 as a nearby moving-average reference, with ETH needing to recover above it to reverse the particular short-term weakness shown in the snapshot. Neither the trading data nor the technical indicators confirms that the exchange transfers caused selling pressure. The October 12 daily gain occurred alongside the reported wallet activity, without establishing a causal relationship.

Ethereum Foundation continues managing its treasury through staking

Alongside asset sales, the Ethereum Foundation has expanded the use of staking to support its operations. In February 2026, the organization announced a program involving approximately 70,000 ETH, with staking rewards directed back into its treasury. The foundation said the initiative would support Ethereum’s network security while generating funds for research, grants and ecosystem development.

The program began with an initial deposit of 2,016 ETH and used open-source tools called Dirk and Vouch for validator operations. Dirk allows signing infrastructure to operate across different locations, while Vouch supports multiple Ethereum client combinations. The foundation said it designed the system to reduce reliance on individual infrastructure providers and support client diversity.

By April 3, on-chain tracking indicated that the foundation had completed its approximately 70,000 ETH staking target after depositing a further 45,000 ETH during one session. As covered, the completed allocation was valued at approximately $143 million at the ETH price reported at that time.

Later treasury transactions included the withdrawal of staked ETH through Lido. In late April, blockchain tracking identified an unstaking request involving approximately 17,035 ETH, with further withdrawal activity documented afterward. The foundation had not publicly explained the purpose of every withdrawal when those transactions were reported, leaving the reasons for individual treasury movements unconfirmed.

Its published treasury policy provides for periodic asset sales, staking and participation in decentralized finance protocols. The document states that the foundation calculates potential ETH sales over rolling three-month periods, based on its reserve requirements and operating expenses. It requires quarterly treasury reports to management and the board, with an annual report covering major allocations across fiat assets, unstaked ETH and deployed ETH.
